UNHCR in the Baltic-Nordic region

The main task of the UNHCR Regional Office in Stockholm is to support the governments of the Baltic and Nordic countries in their implementation of the 1951 Convention. This support is given in the form of advice on the application of international treaty standards, training in refugee law, information concerning refugee flows and the situation in countries of origin. The Regional Office also assists NGOs and asylum lawyers by giving advice, information and training.

Public information and awareness activities are very important in ensuring that the general public is sensitised to the plight of the world’s refugees and in combatting xenophobia, as well as for fund raising purposes. The UNHCR Regional Office cooperates closely with governments, local authorities and NGOs in organising public information campaigns and other such activities. Good contacts with media are also essential for getting the message across.

Private sector fund raising is playing an increasingly important role in the financing of UNHCR’s global activities and in this effort, the Regional Office is playing a leading role.
